With the threat of recent New World Screwworm detections in Mexico, cattle producers are looking for tools to address New World Screwworm. We caught up with Thach Winslow with Elanco Animal Health to learn how Elanco is working to enhance the tools available to address New World Screwworm.
Winslow said, “When it comes to part of that mitigation process, we mentioned fly and tick control. We’ve got an enormous portfolio of fly and tick control products. And if there’s ever a time, we won’t talk about Theileria today, but between Theileria and New World Screwworm, there are times to decrease the number of ticks, tick control, and the number of flies, in the case of fly bites, now’s the time to do it. States can seek out to Elanco what’s called a 2-EE, and that’s a process that allows an existing EPA-approved product, insecticide, to have screwworm added to that label.”
“It doesn’t change the dose or the administration or the timing or the species of animal you can put it on, but it does allow to add screwworm to that label if we have evidence that it’s effective. So we already have states that have reached out to us that are looking, Florida and Texas both have gotten some 2-EEs, and you would be turning to those states for how to implement that in your operation. So for Elanco products, go to elanco.us, and that will point you in the right direction and that’ll get you to a sales rep,” said Winslow.
