National Peanut Board: Global Peanut Market Growth Hinges on Innovation and Allergy Education

Today’s conversation with Ryan Lepizier, President and CEO of the National Peanut Board (NPB), highlights both the opportunity and responsibility facing the U.S. peanut industry. According to Lepizier, the global peanut market is projected to grow significantly, expanding from an estimated $92 billion today to $144 billion by 2033. The key question, he says, is whether the peanut industry will seize that growth—or allow competitors to take the lead.
Lepizier believes the foundation of the peanut industry is strong, but future success will require a unified effort. Growth, he notes, depends on the industry’s ability to innovate, advocate, and educate consumers around the world about peanuts and their benefits. Without that collective push, the industry risks missing a historic opportunity.
One of the most important challenges facing the peanut sector this year continues to be peanut allergies. Lepizier emphasized that education plays a critical role in addressing misconceptions and reducing allergy risks. The National Peanut Board’s Little Peanut Campaign, which focuses on educating families and health care providers about early peanut introduction, has already made meaningful progress. The program has helped slow the rise of peanut allergy concerns by sharing science-based guidance with parents and medical professionals.
Beyond education, the National Peanut Board has also committed significant financial resources to allergy research. Lepizier said the board has invested $500,000 in allergy relief grants to support studies focused on prevention, diagnosis, and management of peanut allergies. These research efforts aim to improve safety for consumers while strengthening confidence in peanut products.
According to Lepizier, addressing allergy concerns is not only a public health priority but also essential for long-term industry sustainability. Ensuring peanuts are safe and accessible for as many consumers as possible supports demand growth and protects the future of growers, shellers, and manufacturers.
With global demand expected to rise sharply over the next decade, the peanut industry stands at a pivotal moment. Lepizier’s message is clear: by investing in research, education, and innovation today, the U.S. peanut industry can position itself to capture global growth opportunities and secure a strong future in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
