The American Peanut Council (APC) has spent the past week in Mexico City, working alongside the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to deepen trade partnerships and strengthen relationships with key industry leaders. The goal of this mission was clear — to continue building mutually rewarding partnerships and expand the market for U.S. peanut exports in Mexico.

According to the Council, this collaborative program is focused on enhancing trade opportunities and maintaining a strong export relationship with one of the United States’ most important agricultural partners. In 2024, peanut exports to Mexico totaled 143,000 metric tons, valued at $230 million. So far this year, exports have reached 93,000 metric tons, representing a $143 million investment in U.S. peanut shipments.

Mexico continues to be the number one export market for U.S. peanuts — a distinction that highlights both the quality of American products and the strong cultural connection that peanuts hold across Mexico.

Peter Valentes, representing the American Peanut Council, emphasized this cultural bond, noting that peanuts have become a beloved part of daily life in Mexico.

“The U.S. holds a special place in Mexico culture, and the cuisine of the peanut enjoys roasted and seasoned from street vendors, blended into traditional dishes, and their favorite snack at home,” said Valentes. He added that “peanuts are a staple in everyday life across Mexico, and we’re the best providers for them.”

Ryan Lepusier, President of the National Peanut Board, who also joined the trip, shared his optimism about the partnership’s impact.

“He said it was a very good trip, and that will open the doors for peanut as a staple everyday life use in Mexico. It’s not surprising Mexico stands as the number one export market.”

As the American Peanut Council and USDA continue to expand agricultural diplomacy, these strengthened ties promise to support U.S. farmers, boost trade, and ensure the continued success of peanut exports to Mexico — a market where peanuts are not just an import, but a cherished part of everyday life.
