The U.S. Peanut Federation (USPF) has taken the opportunity to provide detailed comments ahead of the upcoming review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The organization emphasized the crucial role that peanut exports play in supporting American farmers and the broader agricultural economy.

According to the Federation’s report, peanuts are grown in 13 U.S. states, representing a vital segment of American agriculture. The United States ranks as the world’s fourth-largest peanut producer, following China, India, and Nigeria. About 25% of U.S. peanut production is exported, making trade a key contributor to farm income and rural economic stability.

The U.S. Peanut Federation underscored that Canada and Mexico remain the top export destinations for U.S. peanuts and peanut products. Together, these two countries account for roughly 53%—or $479 million—of total U.S. peanut and peanut product exports each year. This strong export performance demonstrates the importance of maintaining a stable and open trading relationship under the USMCA framework.

Looking at historical trade data, the Federation noted that U.S. peanut trade value with Canada increased by $241 million between the 2003 and 2004 marketing years, reflecting an annual growth rate of about 1.8%. Over the same period, total trade in peanuts between the U.S. and Canada grew by 1.78%, illustrating steady demand and mutual benefit for both countries.

Encouraged by this progress, the U.S. Peanut Federation expressed support for continued trade growth under the USMCA, particularly with expanded market opportunities in Mexico and Canada. The organization’s submission urged policymakers to protect the gains achieved through the agreement while working to further strengthen North American agricultural partnerships.

The USPF remains optimistic that the USMCA review will reinforce the importance of agricultural trade integration, benefiting U.S. peanut farmers, processors, and exporters. By continuing to reduce barriers and promote fair market access, the Federation believes the U.S. peanut industry can build on its success and secure a sustainable future in North American markets.
