A coalition of agricultural organizations has sent a formal letter to President Donald Trump, urging him to take action to support American farmers amid worsening economic conditions in the sector.

“We need help. We encourage you to continue using your considerable international leverage to secure new export markets, access for Georgia and all US farm products. We also ask that you continue to champion domestic market expansion efforts,” the letter stated.

The groups acknowledge the long-term efforts underway to strengthen U.S. agriculture, but emphasized the urgent need for short-term support. “We know that building markets takes time and while our producers do not want to be in the position of having to ask for more assistance, they do need a bridge to get to the improved markets. So we hope that you will advocate for these farmers that are in trouble right now.”

According to the letter, Chapter 12 bankruptcy filings — a form of bankruptcy specifically for family farmers and fishermen — have surged. “Chapter 12 bankruptcy filings are up 56% from the 12-month period ending June 30, 2024. This also represents the second year of increased filings on bankruptcy.”

Farmers continue to face pressure from high input costs, unpredictable markets, and delayed relief from federal legislation. While new legislation promises long-term improvements, many farmers are struggling to stay afloat until those programs begin.

The letter praised Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, stating, “Fortunately, Secretary of Agriculture Rollins is a strong advocate and has been doing everything possible to help the farmers with their legislation.” However, the groups emphasized that “it all won’t kick in until October 26, and we need a bridge to get to the new farm legislation.”

The request from these agricultural groups reflects a deep concern about the future of rural America. With rising bankruptcies and delayed policy impacts, the letter urges the Trump Administration to act now to provide transitional aid and secure both international and domestic opportunities for U.S. farm products.

The coming months will be critical in determining whether the necessary short-term support will arrive in time to stabilize a sector that remains the backbone of the American economy.
