The Georgia Cotton Commission’s (GCC) presence at this week’s Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Georgia, allows the GCC to educate Expo attendees about cotton’s importance. Part of that continuing education is promoting the National Cotton Council’s “Plant Not Plastic” campaign.
Taylor Sills, GCC executive director, discussed the campaign with AgNet Media.
“The Plant Not Plastic Initiative was spearheaded by the National Cotton Council. It was really to highlight the importance of natural fibers as well as the downside of synthetics. We know that there are microplastics which are tiny little pieces of plastic that come off of macroplastics that get into our water and get into our food, and unfortunately, our bodies,” Sills said.
“We think there may be some pretty serious health implications from that. This initiative is to highlight, not only, by buying cotton products are you supporting farmers in your community and farmers in your state; you’re supporting family businesses and you’re supporting rural America. But you’re also supporting your health, the health of your community that are obviously impactful. That’s what this program is really all about. We’re very excited about it and the direction that it’s going.”
