The Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year luncheon this week brought together the top farmers from across the Southeast. That included Alabama Farmer of the Year Dr. Nealy Barrett Jr.

He expressed humility and gratitude for being up for the honor on Tuesday alongside farmers from neighboring states like Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

“I don’t really consider it a competition. I really appreciate the privilege of being able to be a part of the organization that they have and the other farmers that I’ve been able to meet and discuss similar problems,” Barrett said. “Even though they’re not in the cattle industry, they’re in agriculture. Win or lose, it was a win just to get here. It’s been really nice to listen to a lot of the input from the other farmers.”

Barrett did not win. That honor went to Georgia vegetable producer Kent Hamilton. But Barrett is already a winner in agriculture, establishing himself a successful cattleman, working alongside his son, Justin. His farming operation includes 2,600 acres, 900 of which are dedicated to hay and haylage; and a plethora of adult cows and stockers; including  400 adult cows in Bar Neal Farms and 3,500 to 4,000 stockers every year in B&B Cattle.

Barrett highlighted what has helped him be successful for so many years.

“I think it’s pretty much a secret of hard work, but on the other hand, if you love and enjoy what you do, you really don’t ever go to work. The good Lord has blessed us tremendously, putting us along with the right people at the right time. My family, especially my son, has done a tremendous job of getting us where we are today,” he added.
