The Sunbelt Ag Expo kicks off this week in Moultrie, Georgia, and attendees will have the unique opportunity to participate in a wide range of educational field demonstrations — especially in the hay fields.

We caught up with Dr. Lisa Baxter, who shared exciting updates about this year’s hay demonstrations. “We have over 80 acres of hay ground here at the Sunbelt Ag Expo. And during the year, we use some of it for research, the rest for production. But the week of Sunbelt Ag Expo, it is all hay demonstrations all the time.”

Dr. Baxter encourages visitors to join the action: “So I would encourage you to come out on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. We run demos starting at 10 a.m., running until 2 to 3 p.m. depending on the day.” These sessions provide a hands-on view of the latest hay production technologies, showcasing tools and techniques that producers can use on their own farms.

Don’t Miss the Baler Race and New Additions

One of the biggest crowd favorites returns this year: “And the baler race is always a crowd pleaser. That’s running at noon and 2 o’clock every day.”

In addition to the classic events, two new demonstration areas are drawing attention:

“There’s a lot of questions about forage testing and what tools that we use for that. And so we will have a demonstration area set up each morning so that you can see how we test that material and how to submit those samples and ask questions to our state specialists.”

Another new feature is the daily round bale weigh-off:

“At lunch every day, we are having a round bale weigh-off where you can see exactly how much those round bales that are coming out of those pretty shiny new balers actually weigh and how that would translate to differences in energy and protein that are going to be sent to the livestock later on.”
