National Peanut Day 2025: Surprising Facts and a Nutty Celebration

National Peanut Day, celebrated on September 13, is a chance to honor one of America’s favorite foods. The National Peanut Board marked the occasion by sharing some fun and surprising facts about peanuts and peanut butter that highlight just how essential this nut is to American agriculture and snacking culture.

It’s a great snack, a great ingredient, and a super food.

One of the most eye-catching stats? It takes 540 peanuts to make just one 12-ounce jar of peanut butter. And there are legal standards for what qualifies as “real” peanut butter.

They said it takes 540 peanuts to make a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter. By law, any product labeled peanut butter in the United States must be at least 90% peanuts. Others have to call themselves peanut spread.

Peanuts also make a big impact on the candy industry.

Four of the top ten candy bars in America contain peanuts or peanut butter.

In agriculture, peanut farming is a major industry.

The average peanut farm, they said, is about 100 acres.

And when it comes to snacking, peanuts reign supreme.

Peanuts are the number one snack consumed by the U.S., accounting for two-thirds of the snack nut market.

The National Peanut Board continues to promote peanuts globally and celebrate their nutritional and economic value.

Even U.S. history has been shaped by peanut farmers.

Two peanut farmers have been elected President of the United States, President of the U.S., and were peanut farmers. Thomas Jefferson was one. Jimmy Carter was number two.

Looking ahead, peanut lovers can gather in Plains, Georgia, for another celebration.

And we’d like to invite you now to Plains on the 27th of September when the Plains Peanut Day will be held. We’ll be there grilling hot peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Whether it’s National Peanut Day or just a random Tuesday, peanuts remain a nutritious, affordable, and delicious part of everyday life.

So, the 13th was National Peanut Day. Any day can be a good day to enjoy peanuts and peanut products.
