A very important peanut tour is being held this week.
It’s the 37th annual Georgia Peanut Tour, taking place in the Valdosta area and bringing together researchers, growers, industry leaders, and policymakers for a comprehensive look at the state of the peanut industry in 2025.
“It’s the 37th annual Georgia Peanut Tour being held in the Valdosta area this week. It starts off with hot topics on peanuts as they talk about innovations and opportunities to enhance the resiliency of the peanut industry. It’s a table topic starting at two o’clock. That’s on Tuesday, I believe. And yes, they’ll be bringing all kind of hot topics for discussion.”
Key presentations during the opening session include a variety of current and future-facing issues affecting peanut producers across the Southeast.
“They’ll be talking about the impact of trade policy on the peanut industry by Dr. Menasamy. And there’s a discussion on supply management and the availability of agrochemicals. Chris Shimon will be doing that topic. The Farm Bill update will be discussed by Amanda Smith with the Cooperative Extension Service.”
Innovation in product development also plays a key role in this year’s event.
“A new application product and how to use peanuts in some new ways will be discussed by Don Kaler of the Georgia Peanut Commission. Also, there’s a discussion on the current peanut crop by Dr. Scott Munford and a discussion on peanuts and the fight against malnutrition by Dr. Bob Kimmerite.”
These sessions make up the kickoff to the Georgia Peanut Tour, which then continues with field visits.
“They’ll move to the field on Wednesday and Thursday and bring an update at various buying points and industries that they’ll be visiting. Georgia Peanut Tour going on this week in the Valdosta area.”
As the peanut industry faces challenges related to trade policy, input availability, and nutrition demand, the Georgia Peanut Tour remains a valuable hub for knowledge sharing and strategic planning.
