Peanut digging has begun in some fields across Georgia. The process will ramp up next week, according to Scott Monfort, University of Georgia (UGA) Extension peanut agronomist. He discussed the peanut crop during the UGA Cotton and Peanut Field Day on Wednesday.
“We are beginning to see some (peanuts) come up in the state; a couple of counties in the central part and southern part, so it’s not just at the bottom moving up,” Monfort said.
“A good many of our growers planted in April, and probably at least one-third of the crop was planted before May 10. Those are coming pretty quickly, especially the April planted. We’re 135ish, 140 (days) on a couple of places. We’ve got a couple of areas where dry land was an issue. We didn’t get the rain in some places for a couple of weeks. Some of what’s coming up, we had some big growers go ahead and get started. They’re going to be a little bit early on the first couple of fields. By the time they get into their other acres they’re going to get in the right time.
“It’s one of the prettier crops I’ve seen in a while.”
