In a major win for consumer health and food safety, WK Kellogg Co., better known as Kellogg’s, has agreed to permanently remove artificial food dyes from its cereals sold in the United States. The commitment follows a formal investigation and negotiation process led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who announced the deal last week.

The agreement, finalized in an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance (AVC), is legally binding and requires Kellogg’s to eliminate petroleum-based food colorings from its cereals by the end of 2027.

According to a press release from Attorney General Paxton’s office, Kellogg’s is the first to sign a legally binding agreement where other companies have verbally committed to removing food dyes.

Attorney General Paxton stated,
“Following months of investigating and negotiating, I’m proud to officially say Kellogg’s will stop putting these unhealthy ingredients in its cereals. The signed AVC demonstrates that Kellogg’s is committed to keeping this pledge, and I commend the company for doing the right thing. I encourage other food manufacturers to sign similar agreements to demonstrate their commitment to helping Americans live healthier lives.”

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins also applauded the deal in a social media post, saying:
“GOD BLESS TEXAS! Shoutout to Attorney General Ken Paxton for securing a game-changing deal with Kellogg’s to STOP adding artificial dyes to their cereals, ensuring our kids enjoy the wholesome goodness of grain-based cereals! Kellogg’s is the first company to sign a legally binding agreement removing toxic dyes from cereal. More to come! There is no American Mom or Dad anywhere that would rather their child be fed by a chemist than a great American farmer.”

Attorney General Paxton issued a civil investigative demand to Kellogg’s in February, later launching a formal investigation in April. The action followed public claims that Kellogg’s had eliminated artificial dyes in Canada and Europe, while continuing to use them in products sold to American consumers.
