In a high-stakes diplomatic moment, President Trump and Russian President Putin are scheduled to meet today in Alaska, drawing global attention and reactions from nations with a vested interest in the outcome—China among them.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the war in Ukraine and the global race for rare earth minerals, which play a critical role in energy, technology, and defense sectors.

Several countries hoping the talks go south, China among them. Looking at the talks, it’s unlikely that there will be a peace agreement after just one round of talks here.

Geopolitical analysts point to a shift in Russia’s tone earlier this year before Chinese influence deepened Moscow’s wartime commitment.

President Putin is also talking with Chinese presidents. Interesting to note that Putin seemed eager to find an exit from the war earlier this year until the Chinese president made a visit to Moscow. The war has escalated since.

Much of China’s concern centers around its dominance in the global rare earth supply chain. A resolution in Ukraine could threaten that hold.

China, in our view, has a lot to lose if there is an agreement reached. First, it gives the United States access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. China currently holds about 90 percent of the world’s supplies and is holding onto them very tight.

With the United States seeking to diversify its rare earth sourcing, Ukraine’s untapped resources could shift the balance of power in tech and defense manufacturing.

Meanwhile, agricultural markets are showing cautious optimism despite global uncertainty.

This is the Bottom Line report. Live cattle, feeder cattle futures may attract more buyers. From the early week slide, feedlot operators have a lot of high-priced feeders in their lot, making them nervous.

As the Trump-Putin meeting unfolds, the world is watching not just for peace overtures but for the broader implications in global trade, supply chains, and diplomacy. Even one round of talks may shape strategies for years to come.
