USDA Reports 92% of U.S. Peanut Crop Now Pegging: Georgia Leads with 96%

Dan Peanuts, USDA-NASS

According to the latest report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the 2025 U.S. peanut crop is estimated at 92% pegging, just slightly above the five-year average of 90%. This milestone indicates that the national peanut crop is on track and progressing well as growers move through the heart of the growing season.

Crop condition ratings across the country are stable, with 0% very poor, 3% poor, 24% fair, 62% good, and 11% excellent. These numbers reflect a relatively healthy crop, though regional conditions vary.

In Georgia, the nation’s leading peanut-producing state, 96% of the crop is pegging, putting it ahead of the national pace. Conditions in Georgia include 4% poor, 27% fair, 59% good, and 10% excellent. According to Scott Monfort, peanut specialist, the recent rainfall in west and central Georgia has been a welcome relief, although eastern Georgia continues to struggle with drier conditions.

Monfort cautions growers to prepare for increased disease pressure in the coming weeks:

“Disease will likely start to ramp up… so growers need to stay on time with their fungicide applications, scout your peanuts, and be ready to take action.”

In Alabama, pegging is slightly behind the five-year average at 88%, compared to the state’s typical 91%. No official crop condition rating has been released for Alabama, but the slower progress may be something to watch.

Florida, meanwhile, leads the pegging percentage at 99%, with the crop nearly through this stage. Conditions in Florida are reported as 1% poor, 37% fair, 55% good, and 7% excellent. Favorable cooler temperatures following recent heat waves have been beneficial in Florida and other southeastern states, helping to reduce stress on the plants.

As peanut growers across the Southeast monitor weather patterns, fungicide timing, and crop development, the latest USDA data indicates that the 2025 peanut season is shaping up to be on pace—though continued vigilance will be essential in the coming weeks.
