Southeast Peanut Industry Gathers in Florida for Annual Conference

Peanut farmers across the southeastern United States are gearing up for one of the industry’s most anticipated events of the year—the 26th Annual Southern Peanut Growers Conference. Set to take place July 23–25 at the Edgewater Beach Resort in Panama City Beach, Florida, the three-day gathering will host around 300 attendees from key peanut-producing states.
Focus on Production, Policy, and Promotion
The conference agenda is packed with valuable sessions aimed at keeping growers informed on the latest issues affecting the peanut sector. Topics will range from peanut production techniques to legislative updates and marketing strategies.
A major highlight will be Thursday’s focus on policy and leadership. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) new pesticide strategy will be the subject of one of the morning panel discussions. This is expected to draw strong interest from farmers looking to understand how regulatory changes could impact their operations.
Another anticipated session will center around the “farmer’s attitude,” featuring alumni of the Peanut Leadership Academy. Farmers from across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina will participate in this panel, offering insights into leadership development and peer-to-peer learning within the peanut industry.
The day will also include remarks from Billy Sinquefield, a well-known figure in the peanut world, who has earned the unofficial title of “most famous peanut farmer.”
Legislative Focus on Friday
Friday’s agenda turns toward national policy, with a strong focus on legislative developments. U.S. Congressman G.T. Thompson, a Republican from Pennsylvania and current chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, will address attendees. His presence underscores the importance of agricultural policy discussions during a critical time for the industry.
Attendees will also hear from Bob Redding of The Redding Firm, who will provide updates on current legislative activities relevant to peanut growers.
Celebrating Grower Achievements
The conference will also include the presentation of the annual Farm Press Peanut Efficiency Award, recognizing outstanding performance in peanut production. This award highlights growers who achieve high yields through strategic use of resources, advancing both sustainability and profitability in the industry.
Looking Ahead
With expert speakers, timely policy discussions, and a focus on grower success, the 2024 Southern Peanut Growers Conference promises to be a vital touchpoint for the peanut industry in the Southeast. Farmers attending the event will leave with valuable insights and a renewed sense of community as they face the challenges and opportunities of the year ahead.
