The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a statement this week regarding disaster aid for farmers. With the process of distributing federal disaster aid to some states still ongoing, USDA Director of Communications Seth W. Christensen criticized Congressional Democrats in his statement for, “politicizing disaster aid for farmers in need across the country.” Christensen’s statement said, “Congressional Democrats are playing politics with disaster aid, withholding critical funding for farmers to manufacture controversy and blame the Trump administration when in reality they’re pushing to misuse taxpayer dollars.”

Secretary Rollins is working in good faith to deliver relief quickly and responsibly. USDA has met weekly with eligible states offering flexible options and clear guidance to avoid duplicating existing federal programs. Some states, led by partisan officials, have refused to engage.

They’re not just denying aid to their own farmers, they’re now delaying relief for producers nationwide. Secretary Rollins remains focused on getting farmers the support they need despite these political stunts. According to the USDA FSA’s Supplemental Disaster Assistance website, which includes details on the current status of disaster relief funds, the site notes that USDA has received general block grant requests in the southeast from Florida and Georgia, including damages from Hurricane Helene.

Final negotiated agreements with the states are expected by June 13, 2025, with fully executed agreements expected to be completed by June 30, 2025.
