Registration is ongoing for this year’s Southern Peanut Growers Conference, scheduled for July 23-25 at the Edgewater Beach Resort Conference Center in Panama City Beach, Florida. The three-day event will provide peanut growers from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina with information about peanut production, legislative issues, marketing and promotions.

The Georgia Peanut Commission (GPC) is one of the member organizations that comprise the Southern Peanut Farmers Federation.

Don Koehler, executive director of the Georgia Peanut Commission, discussed this summer’s conference which will have plenty to offer the region’s producers.

“We’re getting in the short rows as farmers would say, getting close to the time to have this conference,” Koehler said. “We’re doing several things this year that are interesting. It’s a farm bill year, we hope. We hope those kind of reports will happen. We’re also looking at farmer attitudes right now. We’re going to do a survey and Extension guys are going to help with that, just looking at things that farmers feel like they need. It will help fine-tune programs a little more than what all of us have. We’re going to look at new opportunities that are out there as well. We’ve started working towards some non-food use and things like that which are interesting parts of our program. We’ll have a report from Washington (D.C.), and that’ll be really good.”
