An axle weight bill is making its way through the Alabama Legislature. Currently, trucks are limited to loads of 80,000 pounds with a 10% variance, but with no more than 20,000 pounds per axle. Senate Bill 110, sponsored by Senator Jack Williams of Mobile County, would increase axle weights by 10 percent to 22,000 pounds plus the allowable load tolerance. The bill would also limit the weight of a tandem axle to 44,000 pounds plus the allowable load tolerance. While the bill would not increase the total load weight, it would allow trucks to reach legal gross weight without the potential of receiving a ticket for an overloaded axle. The bill would also limit the number of trucks that can be pulled over at a portable weigh station to three trucks. The bill has passed through the Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry committee and has been placed on the calendar for a vote by the Alabama Senate.
