Helene and Southeast Cotton Crop Progress

The cotton and peanut harvests continue across the Southeast. In the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) weekly crop report, progress is being noted. But this week, USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey looks at cotton crop progress and condition in some of the growing areas impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The USDA report notes this is how the cotton and peanut crops were progressing across the Southeast as of this past Sunday:

In Alabama, cotton bolls opening is 91 percent, which compares to 86 percent this time last year, with the 5-year average is 83 percent. Cotton harvested was 20 percent, which compares to 17 percent last year with the 5-year average being 15 percent. Peanuts dug are at 64 percent, which compares to 59 percent last year and the 5-year average of 52 percent. Peanuts harvested were 30 percent, which compares to 36 percent this time last year while the 5-year average is 35 percent. 

In Florida, cotton bolls opening is 81 percent, which compares to 83 percent this time last year, with the 5-year average is 72 percent. Cotton harvested was only 8 percent, which compares to just 6 percent both last year and the 5-year average. Peanuts dug are at 51 percent, which compares to 67 percent last year and the 5-year average of 66 percent. Peanuts harvested were 40 percent, which compares to 52 percent this time last year while the 5-year average is 50 percent. 

In Georgia, cotton bolls opening is 84 percent, which compares to 82 percent this time last year, with the 5-year average is 84 percent. Cotton harvested was 12 percent, which compares to just 6 percent last year while the 5-year average is 13 percent. Peanuts dug are at 29 percent, which compares to 37 percent last year and the 5-year average of 45 percent. Peanuts harvested were 15 percent, which compares to 20 percent this time last year while the 5-year average is 29 percent.
