There have been various reports the past few weeks about Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), mostly in in the Midwest and Northern parts of the country. But none-the-less, the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association is keeping a close eye on these disease reports. Their CEO, Johnny Adams, told Southeast AgNet’s Randall Weiseman so far it’s not spreading from farm to farm due to good bio-security.
The concerns are that wild birds are spreading the disease in parts of not only the U.S., but also in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Canada.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture notes with the recent detections of HPAI in wild birds and domestic poultry in the U.S., bird owners should review their biosecurity practices and stay vigilant to protect poultry and pet birds from this disease. APHIS is working closely with State partners on surveillance, reporting, and control effort.
