Harvest of Cotton and Peanuts Lags behind Normal

Harvest for the nation’s cotton crop continues and conditions remain resilient despite the slower than average development. But, USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says the pace of cotton harvest is still behind last year’s pace and the five year average.

And Rippey said while this year’s peanut crop condition is rated significantly better than last year’s at this time, the pace of the harvest is well behind last year and the five year average.

In Alabama, 89 percent of the cotton crop saw bolls opening, which compares to 95 percent last year and 95 percent is the 5-year average. Cotton harvested is at 22 percent, which compares to 32 percent last year and 48 percent is the 5-year average. For peanuts, 70 percent have been dug which compares to 77 percent last year at this time, 85 percent is the 5-year average. 47 percent of the crop has been harvested, which compares to 59 percent last year, while 73 percent is the 5-year average.

In Florida, 84 percent of the cotton crop had bolls opening, which compares to 91 percent last year and 91 percent is the 5-year average. Cotton harvested is at 16 percent, which compares to 8 percent last year and 20 percent is the 5-year average. As for peanuts, 87 percent have been dug which compares to 88 percent last year at this time, while the 5-year average is 91 percent. 69 percent have been harvested which compares to 75 percent last year while the 5-year average is 83 percent.

In Georgia, 90 percent of the cotton crop saw bolls opening, which compares to 92 percent last year and 96 percent is the 5-year average. Cotton harvested is at 23 percent, which compares to 26 percent last year and 40 percent is the 5-year average. As for peanuts, 74 percent have been dug which compares to 74 percent last year, while the 5-year average is 83 percent. 53 percent have been harvested which compares to 57 percent last year while the 5-year average is 69 percent.
