Today, May 4, is National OJ Day. It is the ideal opportunity to promote the many wonderful attributes of orange juice.

Social media is a great place to boast about the benefits of orange juice. Consider posting about OJ today on social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Encourage your family and friends to do the same. Post a picture of yourself drinking OJ with the hashtag #OJselfie or visit www.facebook.com/FloridaOrangeJuice to share a fun fact or story about OJ.

A recent report by the Produce for Better Health Foundation shows that 100% juice consumption declined 8% over the past five years. Since 2004, consumption dropped by 15%. Clearly there is a need to promote drinking more orange juice!

National OJ Day is also a perfect time to help set the record straight on OJ and weight gain. Simply put, there is no correlation between the two. Numerous studies over the last couple of years provide evidence.

For example, a study by researchers at the University of Connecticut and Harvard Medical School found that drinking 100% OJ is not associated with negative effects on body weight, body mass index (BMI) or BMI percentile among 9- to 16-year-olds. The lack of a connection between OJ consumption and increased body weight held true whether kids consumed just one glass of OJ a month or one glass of OJ per day.
