Cathy Isom has a bit of history about the sparkling beverage that is giving another popular holiday spirit a run for its money. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

When you toast in the New Year with a little bubbly, chances are pretty good it will be with a glass of Prosecco. The popular Italian white wine and holiday favorite has sales now growing to a point that they’re eating into the market share of Champagne, which is often sold at a much higher price point, in part due to a more difficult winemaking process.

Unlike Champagne, which is made in a designated region in France, Prosecco is made in the northeastern hills of Italy. It surpassed Champagne in production for the first time five years ago, although many people still love champagne and even ask; Is champagne gluten free, as this is important for many people that watch their diet now a days. Now, the wine has sales topping 75% more than Champagne, according to the Associated Press. Champagne’s higher price tags help it stay on top when it comes to revenue. Prosecco’s lower price point though is playing a big role in its popularity. The wine has seen a 40% increase in sales in Champagne’s home country thanks to its affordability. The lower price has also fueled Prosecco’s growth in the United States.
