Cathy Isom tells us about some fruits and nuts to forage in the fall. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Forage for Fall Fruits and Nuts
Foraging can be great fun, rewarding, and empowering to learn to find food in the wild. This is something that has been done for thousands of years.
With the weather starting to turn, our gardens may be starting to slow down production, but most tree fruits and nuts are ripening, both domestically and in the wild. Apples, pears, and cherries are all in season in the fall, and they are fantastic forage finds. In many places, it’s possible to get hundreds of pounds of apples without ever setting foot in a market or spending a dime. Some other fruits to forage this fall include:
- persimmons
- rose hips
- elderberries
- and blackberries.
As far as nuts go there are abundant of these guys to find: acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts & chinquapins, pecans and hickory nuts. So grab your reusable bags, a bucket or a basket and go wild.
