Cathy Isom gives us some facts about why we are celebrating a whole range of feathered friends. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Celebrating National Poultry Day
Today is National Poultry Day. It’s a day when we recognize some of our feathered friends that are raised for their meat and eggs. Such as chicken, turkey, and other birds we commonly consume – including ducks, geese, quail and pheasant.
Poultry is farmed in large numbers with chickens being the most numerous. Aside from eating fowl on the major holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, the USDA reports the average American consumes 222 pounds of chicken or turkey every year.
It is believed that chicken was introduced to American soil by the European explorers in the 16th century. Chicken consumption in the U-S increased during World War II due to a shortage of beef and pork.
Chicken and turkey are lower in fats and cholesterol than other meats.
Celebrate your favorite fowl on National Poultry Day and if posting on social media, use the hashtag #NationalPoultryDay.
