Cathy Isom has a bit of cherry history and tells you why you’ll want to celebrate today with a sweet or tart piece of pie. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Celebrating National Cherry Pie Day
If you’re a lover of cherry pie, then you’re in for a treat, because today is National Cherry Pie Day. Celebrated every year on February 20th, and coincidentally close to President’s Day, cherries was one of President George Washington’s favorite foods!
According to the American Pie Council, the pie came to America with the first English settlers. And fruit pies were a common breakfast food. Cherry Pie is reportedly the 5th most popular pie in the United States behind apple. But in February it’s #1. And, cherries actually belong to the rose family.
Whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, today have a slice of cherry pie fresh from your local bakery. Or try baking your own. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #NationalCherryPieDay when posting to friends and loved ones on social media.
