Cathy Isom checks out some plants to start thinking about for Autumn gardening. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Fall is right around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about what to plant on the farm or in that garden.
When we think of Autumn, pumpkin, and squash might come to mind. Some popular squash choices to plant include Hubbard, Butternut, Acorn, Spaghetti, Baby Pam and sugar pie pumpkins, and Jack-be-little pumpkins.
Some growing tips for late summer planting include finding quicker varieties of squash and miniature varieties of pumpkins since they take anywhere from 75 to 125 days to mature.
It’s also important to note that when planting squash and pumpkin, to water in the morning but they don’t like to have their leaves watered because their large foliage is susceptible to mildew. These fruits are largely water, so it does play a big and vital role in their development. Squashes do prefer deep but infrequent watering as opposed to daily sprinkles. Then, gradually decrease the amount of water as the fruit matures and cut it out completely the week before harvesting.
