Everett Griner talks about a new Georgia citrus crop thriving in today’s Agri View.
While Florida citrus farmers struggle with imported diseases and losses continue to devastate the business. Across the state line into Georgia you will find a rapidly expanding citrus business. A few Georgia growers got involved in citrus production a few years back because it looked like a crop with possibilities. Perhaps as many as thirty farmers planted small acreages of oranges and lemons just to see if they could grow them. They did. It is not the same type of orange that Florida farmers grow. But it thrives in the type of soil found in South Georgia. And, consumers buy the fruit. Success is measured by growth. And now there are over three-hundred growers in Georgia. So far HLB has not been a problem to these Georgia citrus growers. But, it is early so we will just have to wait and see.
That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner.
