Key findings for the Southern Region from the Crop Production 2016 Summary
Alabama:
Corn for grain production for 2016 totaled 37.8 million bushels, up 5 percent from 2015. Cotton planted area is up 10 percent from last year and production is estimated at 705,000 bales, a 27 percent increase. If realized, this will be a record high yield of 987 pounds per acre. Peanut planted area is down 13 percent with production totaling 623 million pounds, down 2 percent from 2015. Hindered by drought conditions throughout the summer, soybean production is down 35 percent from last year.
Florida:
Despite a record high corn yield of 145 bushels per acre, production is down 18 percent from 2015. Cotton planted area is up 20 percent from last year and production is estimated at 200,000 bales, a 31 percent increase. If realized, this will be a record high yield of 960 pounds per acre. Peanut planted area is down 18 percent with production totaling 573 million pounds, down 12 percent from 2015. Soybean production is down 5 percent from last year.
Georgia:
Corn for grain production for 2016 totaled 56.1 million bushels, up 15 percent from 2015. Cotton planted area is up 4 percent from last year and production is estimated at 2,200,000 bales, a 2 percent decrease. Peanut planted area is down 8 percent from last year. With the lowest yield since 2011, peanut production totalled 2.79 billion pounds, down 17 percent from 2015. Despite a record high grain sorghum yield, record low planted and harvested acreage resulted in the lowest sorghum grain production since 1966. Soybean production is down 46 percent from last year due to drought conditions. Tobacco production at 28.4 million pounds is down 13 percent from 2015.
