The price of pork bellies, the cut of meat used to make bacon, has surged 174 percent since hitting a five year low back in April. According to a report by Bloomberg, a risk management consultant at FCStone Group in Kansas City, Missouri said “It’s really demand that’s driving this.” Bacon food items are fueling sales at fast food restaurants. But the rally is not expected to last as consumer demand is expected to shift in the fall. Add to that a large supply of hogs forecast for the fall and prices are expected to retreat for pork bellies and bacon. Pork production rose 15 percent in June compared with last year.
