South Korea confirmed last week a new case of foot-and-mouth disease on a hog farm. Reuters reports the confirmation comes five months after an outbreak elsewhere there which added to fears about food safety. A ministry official said the hog farm south of the countries capitol houses more than 15,000 hogs and those that showed symptoms of the disease would be slaughtered. The livestock disease problems are a big factor behind a jump in pork imports, mainly from the United States and Germany. Those rose 17.6 percent to nearly 300,000 tons in the first 10 months of this year from the same period last year.
