WASHINGTON—The American Sugar Alliance issued the following statement about today’s vote by the United States Senate to table, or kill, a Farm Bill amendment offered by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) to eliminate America’s no-cost sugar policy.
“Amidst political bickering over procedural issues, the Senate today voted in favor of nocost U.S. sugar policy in the Farm Bill. Today’s vote to reject an amendment that would have repealed U.S. sugar policy is great news for taxpayers and grocery shoppers as well as the country’s food security. As many senators noted, the current system operates without taxpayer expense and U.S. grocery shoppers enjoy prices that are well below the world average. Senators voting with sugar producers today should be applauded for
their hard work and commitment to America’s farm families.”
