FDA: OJ Imports Being Detained, Tested For Fungicide; Not Halted

Tacy Callies Citrus, Florida

A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) spokesman Thursday afternoon described as “erroneous” a news agency’s article reporting that FDA was halting all orange juice shipments into the United States. The spokesman said the FDA is detaining OJ shipments at the U.S. border and testing them for the presence of the fungicide carbendazim, which can be used legally on oranges in Brazil, but not in the U.S. If shipments test free of detectable levels of carbendazim, they will be allowed to enter the country. Otherwise they will be turned away or destroyed. The spokesman said three shipment samples tested by FDA so far have preliminary negative results. FDA earlier this week announced that a juice company told FDA that it had detected low levels of the fungicide in its own and competitors’ marketed products, and in some orange juice concentrate not on the market.
