Immigration Issues a Top Priority for Florida Citrus Mutual
Mike Sparks, CEO of grower trade association Florida Citrus Mutual, says Florida growers want to avoid the problems that Georgia farmers encountered when that state passed immigration legislation. He also discusses the federal H2A program that allows guest agricultural workers to enter the U.S. temporarily, and tells how much of Florida’s citrus crop may be harvested by those workers. Highlands County growers did a great job this year battling HLB-spreading psyllids through the use of cooperative spray programs called Citrus Health Management Areas (CHMAs). Highlands County Citrus Growers Association Executive Director Ray Royce reports on that successful effort, and looks ahead to association objectives in 2012. Hear his report.
