Hurricane Irene is lashing the northern coast of the Dominican Republican this morning and expected to move over the Turks and Caicos Islands later Tuesday. At 5 a.m. this morning, the National Hurricane Center said Category 2 Irene had maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour and was moving west northwest at 12 miles per hour. On Wednesday, the central Bahamas will be dealing with Irene. The long range forecast track still has Irene skirting the Florida coast, with outer bands possibly hitting the state’s Atlantic coast. The direct path of the storm in the current track has it aimed at the coast of South Carolina, likely by the weekend. Forecasters say it could be a Category 2 or 3 storm by then.
