Vesicular Stomatitis Confirmed in Second State

Randall Weiseman Equine, Livestock

The National Veterinary Services Laboratory last week reported a positive test of vesicular stomatitis on samples submitted from four horses in Weld County, Colorado. Previous positive cases of this disease have been diagnosed in the southern area of Texas this year. Colorado State Veterinarian Dr. Keith Roehr said this disease can be painful for animals, and costly to their owners, typically causing oral blisters and sores that can cause difficulty in eating and drinking. Veterinarians and livestock owners who suspect an animal may have VS should immediately contact state or federal animal health authorities. For more information, visit APHIS.USDA.gov.
