The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is issuing their weekly crop progress reports for the 2022 season. As of this past Sunday, NASS reports cotton and peanut planting is on par with normal for this time of the year.

But overall, USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says there is a mixed bag on planting progress for cotton across the nation.

As for peanuts, Rippey says planting progress is on pace with last year and the five year average.

In Alabama, corn planted was at 51 percent, which compares to 55 percent last year and the 5-year average is 58 percent. Corn emerged was at 20 percent, which compares to 19 percent last year and the 5-year average is 30 percent. Cotton planting had yet to start, but last year at this time it was at 2 percent while the 5-year average is also 2 percent. Peanuts planted in Alabama were are 1 percent. That compares to zero this time last year but the 5-year average is 1 percent.

In Florida, NASS reports no cotton had been planted as of April 17th, but peanut planting is moving along. As of this past Sunday, 10 percent had been planted which compares to 11 percent last year at this time and the 5-year average is 10 percent.

In Georgia, corn planted as of this past Sunday was at 75 percent, which compares to 80 percent last year and the 5-year average is 83 percent. Corn emerged was at 56 percent, which compares to 66 percent last year and the 5-year average is 67 percent. Cotton planting is also underway, now at 1 percent. That compares to 5 percent last year while the 5-year average is 3 percent. Peanuts planted in Georgia were are 1 percent, which compares to 1 percent this time last year and the 5-year average is also 1 percent.
