After one year in existence, the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol® continues to be a major marketability tool for Georgia’s cotton producers. That’s why Taylor Sills, executive director of the Georgia Cotton Commission (GCC), encourages farmers to participate in the program.
“I would encourage all growers to sign up for it. It’s going to be a major tool to the marketability of America’s cotton. There are other sustainability programs out there. I feel confident that the protocol is the one that looks out for growers the best and proves the sustainability efforts that we’re talking about,” Sills said. “It’s here to help show what America’s cotton farmers are doing and have been doing for a long time. I would encourage everyone to give it a look. There are a lot of brands and retailers that are signing up for this program, because they want the cotton. They know the program proves the sustainability, and they want the cotton.”
The Trust Protocol welcomed more than 465 brand, retailer, mill and manufacturer members and secured 950,000 bales of cotton into the system in the first year. The Trust Protocol drives constant improvement in six key sustainability metrics– land use, soil carbon, water management, soil loss, greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.
