While the U.S. cotton crop is still behind last year in the pace of the crop setting bolls, USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says overall the crop remains in good shape.

In Alabama, only 27 percent of the cotton crop saw bolls opening, which compares to 52 percent last year and 56 percent is the 5-year average. As for peanut harvest, 4 percent have been dug which compares to 9 percent last year at this time.

In Florida, 24 percent of the cotton crop had bolls opening, which compares to 33 percent last year and 42 percent is the 5-year average. As for peanut harvest, 21 percent have been dug which compares to 26 percent last year and 22 percent is the 5-year average. 13 percent has been harvested which compares to 19 percent last year while the 5-year average is 14 percent.

In Georgia, 43 percent of the cotton crop saw bolls opening, which compares to 50 percent last year and 57 percent is the 5-year average. As for peanut harvest, 3 percent have been dug which compares to 5 percent last year at this time, while the 5-year average is 8 percent.
