Favorable weather conditions for the cotton and peanut harvests were found around most of the Southeast last week. USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey says cotton harvest production areas had good weather nationwide for field work activities.
Rippey notes that despite favorable weather this past week, the peanut harvest is still behind schedule.
In Alabama, cotton harvest was 57% complete, while last year it was at 77% and the 5-year average of 70%. As for the peanut harvest, 94% had been dug, which compares to 96% last year; 86% had been harvested which compares to 93% last year and the 5-year average of 86%.
In Florida, cotton harvest was only 25% complete, while last year it was at 54%, and the 5-year average of 47%. As for the peanut harvest, 97% had been dug, which compared to 99% last year and the 5-year average of 99%; 92% percent had been harvested, which compared to 98% last year and the 5-year average of 98%.
In Georgia, cotton harvested was at 52%, which compared to 72% last year and the 5-year average of 62%. As for the peanut harvest, 93% had been dug which compared to 98% last year and the 5-year average of 95%. Peanuts harvested were at 80%, which compared to 92% last year and the 5-year average of 86%.
