With Hurricane Sally spreading heavy rain and wind across parts of the Southeast this week, the opening of cotton bolls are a concern in some areas. And of course, peanut harvest will see a pause for a few days. But as of this past Sunday, USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says nationwide, cotton condition ratings are unchanged from last week.
In Alabama, 55% of the cotton bolls are open, which compares to 66% last year and the five-year average of 60%. As for the peanut harvest, 10% have been dug, which compares to 12% last year. Three percent have been harvested which compares to 5% last year and the 5-year average of 1%.
In Florida, 33% of the cotton bolls are open, which compares to 47%last year and the five-year average of 45%. Peanuts dug are at 27%, which compares to 31% last year and the 5-year average of 25%. Twenty percent have been harvested, which compares to 12% last year and the 5-year average of 14%.
In Georgia, 52% of the cotton bolls are open, which compares to 67% last year and the five-year average of 63%. As for the peanut crop, 5% have been dug which compares to 11% last year, while the 5-year average is 10%. Peanut harvest was at 2%, which compares to 4% last year and the 5-year average of 4%.
