Last Friday, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced that Japan had agreed to eliminate long-standing restrictions on U.S. beef exports, including the 30-month cattle age limit. Later that day, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced the removal of Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Mexico and Canada and elimination of those countries’ retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. As U.S. Meat Export Federation’s Joe Schuele reports, these are important breakthroughs for U.S. red meat.
