Cathy Isom has a few great tips about growing your own Ginger. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.

Growing Your Own Ginger

You can grow one of the world’s most notable spices, known for its medicinal qualities and instantly recognizable flavor,  Ginger.  And, growing it from home is easier than you might think.

Every time you buy a hunk of fresh ginger, you’ve essentially bought the potential to grow more of it. Start growing your own Ginger plant by cutting off one of the knobby nodes protruding from the plant. Once it’s cut, It will look sort of like an eye. And that is where the new plant will eventually begin to spring forth.

To plant the ginger, simply place the eye facing upward about three inches deep in good, nutrient-rich soil. Don’t let the soil dry out but also don’t overwater.  Ginger doesn’t require much sunlight. It’s a tropical plant and enjoys the heat, but in colder climates, it feels right at home in a pot indoors.  Ginger starts relatively small and has been known to grow two to three feet tall.

For best flavor and results, wait about ten months after planting when the leaves start to die off.
