Are you interested in saving a little money, and, growing beautiful tomatoes next growing season? Cathy Isom has the solution. She lets you know how to save those tomato seeds for next year’s garden. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
Saving Tomato Seeds for Next Year’s Garden
If you’ve never done it before, or want to try your luck at it for next year, here’s now to save tomato seeds and turn them into next year’s harvest.
First, pick your tomato variety or varieties. It’s important to use high quality tomatoes. Next cut tomatoes in half, top to bottom, and squeeze the seeds and the pulp into a jar. Allow the fermentation process to begin, up to four days, and expect some white mold to grow during the process. After about 4 days, add water and watch. Immature seeds will float and viable ones will sink. Rinse seeds and dry thoroughly, using a coffee filter or paper plate. Place near a fan to speed up the process.
When seeds crack easily, then it’s time to pack them away in an airtight container and place in a cool, dry, dark spot, until next year, when it’s time to plant the seedlings for next year’s offerings.
