Cathy Isom gives us the eye opening reasons the United States got a low ranking in the Food Sustainability Index. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
United States Food Sustainability Ranking
The Food Sustainability Index is a study conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, analyzing food sustainability in 35 nations. Countries are graded on several variables. Among them the most important it seems, is food waste.
France took the # 1 ranking, and the United States scored 21st place. France took the top spot just one year after it became the first country to require supermarkets to donate unsold food to charities. As well as requiring restaurants to provide to-go bags when requested or face hefty fines up to more than 80 thousand United States dollars and jail time.
The low ranking for the United States is mainly due to our overconsumption of meat, sugar, and saturated fats. It also scored lower than other countries of poor management of soil and fertilizer in agriculture.
