The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension is sponsoring a series of seminars next week focusing on issues that involve inheriting farmland.
The seminar is titled “So, You’ve Inherited a Farm, Now What?” and will provide information and education about farmland ownership. Extension Educator Allan Vyhnalek will be one of the presenters at the two and half hour seminar.
Vyhnalek says when farmland is inherited the basic options to consider are to either keep the property or to sell the land. He says those decisions often need to be made by several individuals and not just one person.
If the decision is the keep the land, then decisions need to be made on how to manage the farm ground. If the decision is to sell the land, then a price tag needs to be put on the land. Overall, he says a number of issues need to be considered.
Vyhnalek says communication between family members is extremely important to make the process go smoothly. The seminars will focus on strategies for dealing with family issues and proper family communications.
Unfortunately he says communication between family members can become difficult and challenging as the discussions move forward on what should be done with the family farm.
Those interested in attending should contact their local extension office to pre-register for the seminar.
