Celebrate National Taco Day

It may no longer be Taco Tuesday, but I have a feeling that won’t make a difference since this year National Taco Day falls on a Wednesday.

Last year, Americans binged on 4.5 BILLION tacos. That’s 490,000 miles of tacos, which could take you to the moon and back. 4.5 Billion tacos are roughly 775-million pounds which equal the weight of two Empire State Buildings.

Tacos are made of soft or hard-shelled corn or wheat tortillas and wrapped or folded around a filling that is generally made of spiced proteins, such as beef, pork or fish. Then, topped with lettuce, cabbage, cheeses, onions, tomatoes, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream.

Why the history of the taco is really unknown, some claim the word originates from the silver mines in Mexico in the 18th century, when taco referred to the little explosives workers used to extract the ore.
