Agri View: Lemon Imports

Dan Agri View, Citrus, Fruits

lemonEverett Griner talks about why the lemon producers wanting to stop imports in today’s Agri View.

You know we grow a lot of fruit in this country. It is very likely more than anywhere else. One of the least common, and least talked about, is the lemon. It is not a fruit you eat a lot. It is mostly used for seasoning. But, it is an important crop for a lot of growers. Maybe we don’t grow enough lemons in this country because we are now importing lemons from South America. This doesn’t sit well with United States growers. They fear the same thing could happen to them that tormented Florida citrus farmers. Imported disease. One group in California has instituted legal action to halt the imports from Argentina. The reason for this action is, they fear that their crops will be exposed to insects and disease. It is a sticky situation. And, a long way from being settled. So, we will just have to wait and see.

That’s Agri View for today. I’m Everett Griner…
