Farmers Market Frosty Summer Smoothies

Dan Fruits, This Land of Ours, Vegetables

farmers market fresh smoothieCathy Isom has some tips on making the very best smoothies with all of that farm-fresh produce. That’s coming up on “This Land of Ours.”

Now that you have carried in all of that great farm-fresh produce, after a trip to the local roadside stand or Farmers Market, it’s time to treat yourself. And, with summer upon us, a nice frosty smoothie is sure to hit the spot.

Here are some tricks to making them the very best, ever.

Trick # 1: Don’t add much liquid. If you usually add three cups, scale it back to two cups instead, but not all at once. Add the second cup to your blender after all of the ingredients have been added for a creamier, thicker smoothie instead of a watery mess.

Trick # 2: Try freezing your fresh leafy greens. This will also help smoothies come out much thicker and a bit frostier.

Trick # 3: Trade regular ice cubes for Almond Milk ice cubes. Just pour the milk into regular ice cube trays and freeze overnight. These will keep smoothies from getting watered down and will increase the creaminess.

Trick # 4: Freeze your fruit for later use in a smoothie, especially when they are perfectly ripe. Peel and cut up bananas, mangoes, melons, papaya, cucumber, zucchini, and berries.

Trick # 5: For making that smoothie nice and thick, add superfoods, such as a tablespoon of ground flax, chia seeds, yogurt, coconut flour, protein powder or cacao powder.

You can sip and enjoy your smoothie right after it’s blended, or put it in the freezer for about an hour. You will have a delicious, thick and frosty treat.
