Cathy Isom helps us maintain a healthy diet by taking us on a stroll down the produce aisle. Cathy tells us about the plant-based foods we should always have on hand, even if we’re on a budget. That’s coming up on This Land of Ours.
When it comes to a healthy diet, sometimes what’s in our wallet determines what comes home from the grocery store. Yes, healthy eating can sometimes cost a little more. But we also know the long term benefits of eating right will pay dividends later in life. And, not every food in a healthy diet is as expensive as you might think. So, before reaching for the processed and packaged foods or a quick trip through the drive-thru, head back to the produce aisle or your local farmer’s market.
Here are the top ten affordable and very healthy plant-based foods that are not only filling but will also help you stay on point with your budget.
Sweet potatoes. They’re loaded with tons of vitamins, plus fiber, and they’ll help lower your blood sugar.
Other vegetables that are great additions to any meal or as a snack include Zucchini and carrots. Frozen or Fresh Broccoli is also great inexpensive and nutrient-dense choices and can be paired with just about any meal.
When it comes to fruit, bananas are an easy and inexpensive way to satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way. Eat them slightly spotted, since green and bright yellow bananas can cause indigestion and bloat.
Green Apples. Not just low in price, but low in sugar and high in fiber. They also contain Malic acid which has been linked to fighting cancer and cleansing the liver.
If it’s more greens that you need, Romaine Lettuce should be on your shopping list. it lasts longer in the fridge, and one bag of three organic romaine hearts will lend you three meals, all for about $3-$4 a package.
Consider giving Lentils a try. They have just as much nutrition as beans do, but are less costly and also a bit easier to digest.
Flax or Chia Seeds, highly nutritious and highly affordable. And don’t let the price fool you. A little bit goes a long way with these. They’re also a great source of protein.
Oats are also great for anyone wanting to eat healthy on a budget.
If you keep these 10 foods stocked at all times, you can turn them into a variety of meals to keep you full and healthy, while also keeping your wallet happy.
